2014 - Daughters of Smoke and Bone ~ Laini Taylor

fantasy love story. feels "Twilight-ish". Instead of vampires and humans it's angels and chimaera (humanoid creatures that takes various forms, sort of like the "demons"). Eternal war between angels and chimaera, the female protagonist who is a chimaera incarnate who was in love with this angel.

strong female protagonist is so popular these days, most of the books I've read this year seem to revolve around one. Typical.

(Kotonoha no Niwa)

Narakumi  no sukoshi toyomite

Furazu to mo

Warewa tomaramu imoshi todomeba

~

2014 - Me Before You ~ Jojo Moyes

story about how someone who was hired to be a care giver for someone who is wheelchair bounded after an accident. they touch each other's lives, for better or worse. the man who wants to die and the lady who takes it upon herself to make him want to live.

living. what is living really? am I living if it's not the life I want especially when there is nothing I can do to even improve the circumstances.

Is coping really sufficient? It's something I often ask myself. Coping with life. Sad isn't it, yet that's effectively what many people out there can hope for, only. Coping with life day by day, minute by minute.

“The thing about being catapulted into a whole new life--or at least, shoved up so hard against someone else's life that you might as well have your face pressed against their window--is that it forces you to rethink your idea of who you are. Or how you might seem to other people.”

2014 Balik Kampung 2A (Short Stories)

short stories! short local stories! some humor, some morbid. it's a strange experience reading about the life of people in places that seem so familiar (yes i rarely read any local stores, other than the Singapore Ghost Stories 1 & 2 many many many years ago).

kok seong who siam like xiao to find a nice place for his reading, john who was involved in an well executed ambush on rival school kids etc.

familiar charm to it.

2014 - The Night Circus ~ Erin Morgenstern

Not someone who likes circus but I think I will like the one illustrated in the book.

It's a book about magic, wizards pitting their apprentice against each other in the most unique way. No fireballs or turning each other into toads and such. The competition is set in the Circus, circus where time stood still, with attractions so vividly described you wish you can be there. yes there is the  love story and yes you guessed it, between the apprentices.

I like the ethereal feel of the story with the distinct cast of characters.

oh and the clocks! the amazing clocks, i can't imagine what it is like.

~

"The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called 'Le Cirque des Reves' and it is only open at night."

2014 - A Little History Of The World ~ E.H. Gombrich

Narration from stone age to the second world war. Was never a history buff but this book definitely makes it a easy read. Since it's written by Austrian born, British writer, the history is more of a "western" one (though the author did try to touch on some Asian ones).

I personally think it's a amazing book and one that I will definitely reread. It's almost like a grandfather writing a book for his grandchildren, one that they can understand and appreciate easily.
There's no dates or facts loading, it's one that while celebrating human success also reminds us of our weakness and frailties.
